Department for environment, food and rural affairs (Defra)
United Kingdom

Alan MacLeod PhD began his career in plant health and pest risk analysis (PRA) in 1995 working under Dr Richard Baker at what was then CSL (Central Science Laboratory) a UK government institute that later became the Food and environment research agency (Fera). Before the sale of Fera to Capita plc, Alan and all other pest risk analysts at Fera were transferred to the Department for environment, food and rural affairs (Defra) where they continue to provide technical and scientific advice to UK government plant health officials.

Over the years Alan has gathered significant practical experience of assessing plant health risks to UK, EU and EPPO plants resources from invertebrate pests of potential quarantine significance using national and international risk analysis formats.

Alan has contributed to, and co-ordinated, domestic and European research projects investigating processes to enhance risk analysis and has often worked with partners internationally. He has a strong interest in biosecurity training in developing nations and has delivered PRA training to support NPPOs in Africa and Asia as well as in Europe.

Alan is currently a core member of the EPPO Expert Working Group for Performing PRA and was chair of the International Advisory Group on Pest Risk Analysis until March 2019 when it merged with IPRRG.

Alan especially enjoys the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of risk analysis, working with academics and supervising PhD students. As of June 2019 Alan has over 90 scientific publications in journals or conference proceedings as well as three book chapters. He was guest editor of a special issue of Food Security vol. 8 (1), which contained a series of papers from an international biosecurity conference "Plant health and food security, linking science, economics, policy and industry".
